Comprehensive NCS and EMG Testing
Diagnosing Nerve and Muscle Conditions
If you are experiencing numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or unexplained pain, nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) testing can help uncover the root cause of their symptoms. At Optimum Health & Wellness, we provide comprehensive diagnostic testing to assess nerve and muscle function, helping to identify conditions that may be affecting your mobility and comfort.
What Is NCS Testing?
Nerve conduction studies (NCS) measure the speed of electrical activity in nerves, helping to diagnose nerve damage or disorders. This test is most often performed alongside EMG testing to provide a full picture of nerve and muscle function. Some common conditions that NCS can identify include:
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – Causing pain, tingling, or numbness in the hands and fingers due to entrapment of the median nerve in the wrist.
- Lumbar Radiculopathy (Sciatica) – Sharp, shooting pain in the legs or feet due to nerve irritation or injury of the nerve roots exiting the lower spine.
- Cervical Radiculopathy – Pain, tingling, numbness, or other weakness in the hand or arm due to strain of the nerve roots or parts of the brachial plexus exiting the upper spine.
- Guillain-Barré Syndrome – Marked by significant weakness or tingling in the legs.
- Bell’s Palsy – Facial paralysis or weakness on one side of the face.
- Peripheral Neuropathy – Nerve damage leading to pain and numbness in the hands or feet, which can be determined as due to either local nerve compression or a more global pathology in the body.

Since many nerve disorders share common symptoms, an NCS test provides essential data to help pinpoint the exact nature of the issue and direction for guiding appropriate care and medical follow-up.
What to Expect During NCS & EMG Testing
Both tests require minimal preparation. Clients should avoid lotions or oils on their skin before testing and wear loose-fitting clothing for easy access to the affected area. If they have a pacemaker or similar device, they should inform the testing team in advance.
NCS Testing
EMG Testing
Most sessions last between 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the areas being tested. If both NCS and EMG tests are performed, EMG typically follows NCS.
What Is EMG Testing?
Electromyography (EMG) evaluates the health and function of muscles and the nerves controlling them. This test is particularly useful for clients suffering from work-related injuries, chronic pain, or neurological conditions. EMG can help diagnose:
- Nerve Disorders – Including peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, radiculopathy, and sciatica.
- Muscle Disorders – Such as muscular dystrophy, myopathy, myasthenia gravis, and muscle strain.
- Nerve Injuries – Including nerve entrapment, compression, trauma, and damage.
- Spinal Disorders – Such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs, or spinal cord injuries.
By detecting abnormalities in nerve and muscle function, EMG testing provides crucial information for diagnosis and treatment planning.
